Active Isolated Stretching, The Mattes Method

AIS: What Does It Mean?
Active - Engaging the nervous system; performing self-care; demonstrating to or directing a client through a particular movement.

Isolated - Focused on a specific joint with a group of specific muscles.

Stretching - Innervating a specific agonist to contract at an optimal point of resistance, enabling the antagonist to relax.

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), developed by Aaron Mattes, engages deep and superficial fascia through targeted stretching in a way that encourages tissue release. The result of this technique is muscle lengthening, relaxation, decreased pain, increased flexibility, and assisting the body in the healing process.

What to Expect from this Class This three-day comprehensive class focuses on stretching techniques that are fascia, muscle, and joint specific. AIS adheres to Sherrington's Law of Reciprocal Innervation ("agonist antagonist balance") and Wolfe's law which states, "the body will adapt to the stresses put upon it." When these stretching techniques are properly applied, the result is muscle and fascia (superficial and deep) lengthening, increased flexibility, improved circulation, more oxygen to the tissue, and stronger lymph flow.

The course includes the book Active Isolated Stretching, the Mattes Method by Aaron Mattes. Knowledge of muscle actions and attachments is beneficial, however not required. Wear loose clothing. 24 CE hours
